Description

Dr Jillian Graham, Redmond Barry Fellow 2018-2019, presents her project, a biography of Australian composer, Margaret Sutherland (1897-1984). Dr Graham will provide an insight into Sutherland’s life, including her enormous contribution as an activist for the arts, the challenges she faced as a pioneering woman composer in Australia, and her connections with the University of Melbourne.

This event will feature Sutherland Trio members Caroline Almonte (piano) and Elizabeth Sellars (violin) performing the first movement of Sutherland’s ground-breaking Sonata for Violin and Piano (1925).
